• Avocado and Molasses for Hair Health

    Black strap molasses has become a staple ingredient in my pantry due to its reputation as a nutritious sweetener, containing a highly concentrated mineral content. Molasses is made in the process of extracting sugars from sugar beet and sugarcane and is dark and syrupy in consistency. Many health benefits have been associated with this super affordable and highly nutritious product, one of which is that it may work wonders to improve hair health and even help return colour to prematurely greying hair.

    Another favourite food of mine that has also been rumoured to benefit hair health is the avocado. These decadent fruits are high in vitamins B and E which have both been considered important for hair health. It has been reported that when applied topically, avocados add shine, lustre and moisture to damaged hair and can help promote growth.

    With my love for edible beauty products, I decided to take these two wonder ingredients out of the kitchen and into the bathroom to create an avocado and molasses hair mask.

    This mask has become a weekly ritual that I now look forward to. My hair always appears softer and takes on a healthy shine following. I will often pop my legs up the wall in Viparita Karani while I wait for the mask to absorb which also helps to leave me feeling relaxed and nurtured. 

    To make my weekly hair mask I mix 1/4 of a mashed avocado with 1 tbsp of molasses. I wet my hair slightly with a spray bottle and apply the mixture to my hair, massaging it into my scalp. I allow it to soak in for 20 minutes before rinsing throughly and shampooing/ conditioning as normal.
